Abortions Laws in Texas

Currently in Texas, politics and laws concerning Abortion clinics has come under much scrutiny and has cause a bit of a stir amongst women and liberal factions. The recent abortion regulations, that were passed last summer, state that Abortion clinics must meet certain requirements in order to operate. Some of these requirements include that the clinic's physicians "must have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and to require that clinics meet the same standards as other surgical health-care facilities in the state", according to the "Texas Senate Bill 5" listed on wikipedia. It is a question of whether the abortion laws in Texas are considered constitutional or unconstitutional. I found a few internet news sources showing their opinions on the subject matter.

For example, Becca Aaronson, Texas Tribune, quotes Brigitte Amiri,a senior staff attorney at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project in her statement that "the law is having a devastating impact on women in Texas." From Amiri's statement, I can see the point that she is trying to get across in that it severely limits the choices a woman can make about their own bodies. Amiri states in the article that "extremist politicians" are endangering women's "health and safety by preventing them from accessing safe and legal abortion." Another writer named David Salef Rauf, Mysanantonio.com, quotes Nancy Northup, CEO and President of the Center of Reproductive Rights, in her statement saying "there is no question that the politicians who passed this law intended this as the final blow in their assault on women's constitutional right and ability to safely and legally end a pregnancy in Texas." Northup clearly states that this a definite blow an individual woman's rights and somewhat infers that the politicians who passed the law did it on purpose. Abortion will always be a topic of much controversy because it has a certain personal level that touches society. Being in a state that is ruled by the Republican party can definitely affect ones own beliefs and ideals. The question that comes to mind is...Is it right for the State government to make laws on abortion, that take away freedom of choice for women in Texas?

In my opinion, I believe that one would have to question their own beliefs and ideals when they come to live in Texas, in which people have to understand is that this state is very much a conservative and traditional society that has strict adherence pro-life ideology. Speaking from a Republican view, if you don't like the new abortion regulation laws, then move to another state that isn't as strict and has the proper facilities that meet your needs. Of course we do not live in a society that only has one political party running the show so to be fair...When speaking from a Democratic view, the state government should not impede on a citizen's right given by the national government and over step its jurisdictions. My religious views on this subject matter can be biased in leaning towards pro-life choices. So essentially for me, these new regulations do not "really" affect me unless I decide to foolishly "knock up" a girl.... and ultimately because of me being a guy, I wouldn't have to make the choice of having an abortion done to me, but I do see that it is a question of women's rights being somewhat taken away, so in turn, I feel conflicted because I wouldn't want to be put in a government bind that the women in Texas are being forced to go through. The Texas government can only do so much and its really up to the citizens of the state to elect the proper legislators to get proper and necessary laws to be made.

  1. I personally do not disagree with abortions. If I were to become pregnant I would not chose to end my pregnancy however, other women might have different thoughts. Does that make me think that just because I wouldn't do it other women shouldn't? Just because I think that it's wrong to terminate a pregnancy, that should make it wrong for other women? No it shouldn't, I believe that every woman should chose what they think is best. Morals and laws are two different things. The law says that abortions are legal followed with certain regulations but, completely making abortions illegal I believe is just as wrong.
Perhaps, the woman is not ready for a child or maybe she was a victim of rape, or maybe it is just simply not the right time to welcome a baby into the world. This should not be the choice of other people the only one with that choice is the woman that is pregnant. I don't think that it should be made illegal but, it also cannot be made easy to where girls are irresponsibly getting pregnant and running to the doctor to get an abortion. There are plenty of birth control options out there to help prevent pregnancy but, if it were to happen to get an abortions should not be anybody's choice but the woman who will have to care for that child. Society needs to learn to separate morals from the actual law. Not everyone needs to believe the same thing we believe.

  2. I personally believe that women should have the option to get an abortion if they want one. I think that it is absolutely ridiculous that the government thinks they can put restrictions on what women can and cannot do with their bodies. It's absolutely absurd. Some of the people making the laws to put restrictions on abortions are men, men who don't know what it's like to be a woman, who don't know the thought process as to why some women would want an abortion. Just the thought of men making laws that tell a woman what she can and cannot do just seems terribly wrong. These law makers make these laws to suit their own beliefs and values without any regard to the beliefs and values of the people they're affecting. It seems like they don't care because people who want abortions are just wrong and they know better.

People who say that they're pro life say that they value life and that's why they are against abortions. But how far does their support of the unborn babies go? They want them to be born so they fight for their existence, but then where are they after the baby is born? Do they even care that these babies are being born to people who don't want them and what kind of family environment that sets up for the child? They think the fight is won when the baby comes out, they care nothing about what happens to the child after that. It's not just about bringing children into the world, it's about creating a safe and happy environment for the children. Where are these pro lifers and government officials when it comes to that part?

Now I'm not saying that women should just get abortions whenever they want. Party girl shouldn't just go out, get pregnant and think it's ok she'll just get an abortion. People need to be held accountable for their actions, but there has to be a better way than denying women their freedom. There a preventative measure that need to be more accessible, parents need to talk to their daughters about safe sex, and people need to realize the possible consequences of sex. Because the idea of a woman who's been raped and got pregnant not being able to make her own decision on the matter because of some people that she doesn't even know says she can't just seems wrong.
